The Department of Criminal Law was one of the first departments established at the founding of the Faculty of Law, Padjadjaran University (UNPAD) in 1957, previously known as the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences. The Department of Criminal Law focuses on improving faculty competency, designing courses that align with community needs, and developing teaching materials and methods.
The Department of Criminal Law manages several courses, including Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminology, Victimology, and several others. The development of teaching materials and methods is carried out in courses designed with lectures and practicums, such as Criminal Law Skills, Anti-Corruption Clinic, and Criminal Law Clinic.
The Department of Criminal Law has produced prominent legal figures and thinkers who have held important positions at the national and regional levels, such as Professor Dr. Romli Atmasasmita, S.H., LL.M., as Director General of AHU at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in 2001 and Head of the National Public Prosecutor's Office in 2004; Professor Komariah Emong, S.H., LL.M., as Director General of AHU at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in 2001 and Head of the National Public Prosecutor's Office in 2004; and Professor Komariah Emong, S.H., LL.M., as Director General of AHU at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in 2004. as Supreme Court Justice from 2007 to 2013; Dr. Lies Sulistiani, S.H., M.Hum., as Deputy Chair of the LPSK RI from 2008 to 2013 and 2013 to 2018; Dr. Sigid Suseno, S.H., M.H., as Vice Rector for Governance and Resources from 2015; and Dr. Elis Rusmiati, S.H., M.H., as ad hoc judge at the West Java High Court from 2009 to 2019.
In addition to departmental development, the Department of Criminal Law also initiated the formation of the Criminal Law Student Association (HIMAPI) in 2012, recognizing the crucial role students play in scientific development. This initiative is also based on the importance of sustainable networking, ultimately leading to alumni of the Unpad Faculty of Law.
Members of the Department of Criminal Law continuously participate in national and international conferences. Furthermore, they actively conduct research within their competencies, the results of which are used as teaching materials for courses.
Members of the Department of Criminal Law serve as resource persons in various activities, such as seminars, webinars, workshops, and focus group discussions (FGDs), both at the national and international levels.
The competence of Department members can be seen through their participation or involvement in partner programs, such as those in ministries, law enforcement institutions, legislative bodies, NGOs, and others. Furthermore, Department members develop their competencies through legal consultations, legal assistance, and case handling at the Legal Aid Bureau of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD).
The Department of Criminal Law also continuously updates its courses and develops teaching materials and methods.
